Free-lance miners working in the black shales. Emeralds in the Colombian Cordillera Oriental are found in the so-called "black shales" (these are sedimentary rocks coloured by greyish-black organic substances). Mining is done by some large mining companies (now mostly underground mining) or by the "guaqueiros" (free-lance miners) which use mostly only primitive methods. |
