Extensive
fieldtrip to more than 130 mines in
5 countries has been successfully completed
Being
active in the origin determination of gemstones, the Gubelin Gem Lab is
constantly
working on maintaining and expanding its reference collection and
database with samples from all relevant mines worldwide. The latest
field trip, initiated by the Asian Institute of Gemmological Sciences
(AIGS), and in collaboration with the Gubelin Gem Lab, has just been
completed,
leading from Vietnam and Sri Lanka to Madagascar, Kenya and Tanzania,
allowing to collect samples directly at the source. More than 130
different mines in 23 different mining areas have been visited and
studied. In the next months, the gemmologists from the AIGS and Gubelin
Gem Lab
will analyse and study the collected material, and thus further
strengthen the comprehensive basis of knowledge in this area.
Study
completed
about a new type of Tairus
hydrothermally grown synthetic emerald
Dr.
Karl Schmetzer, Dr. Dietmar Schwarz (Gubelin Gem Lab), Dr.
Heinz-Jürgen
Bernhardt
and Dr. Tobias Häger have completed a gemmological, chemical and
spectroscopical study on a new type of hydrothermally-grown synthetic
emerald. The samples have been grown by Tairus company in Novosibirsk,
Russia. The study explains the reasons for the colouration, the
presence of different types of water molecules and hydroxyl ions, and
crystal-chemical and structural characteristics. It also provides
insight about the microscopic distinction of these synthetic emeralds
from natural ones. This research article will soon be published in the
‘Journal of Gemmology’.
DVD of 2003 interview
with Dr. Eduard Gubelin to be launched during Hong Kong September
show
In 2003, the late Dr. Eduard Gübelin gave an interview about his
life, the world of coloured gemstones, and developments in the gemstone
industry. The Gubelin Gem Lab has now produced an one-hour DVD from
this unique raw
material, being the last film document from and about him. This DVD
will be released during Hong Kong show in September, in context with a Memorial Lecture
(taking place on Saturday, September 24, at 11am)
during which a trailer of the interview will be shown. Donators of the
“Dr. Eduard Gubelin Association for Research and Identification of
Precious Stones” receive a free copy of the DVD.
