The Gubelin Laboratory's staff of gemmologists make frequent journeys to mining localities around the world. This is conducted in order to gain first-hand experience and learn valuable information concerning the local geology and mining activities, as well as acquire reputable source material of the gems found there, for study and analysis back at the Laboratory in Lucerne.

Field-trip Western Himalayan mountains
In summer 2006, the Gubelin Gem Lab sponsored an extensive field trip to mining areas in the Western Himalayan mountains, to visit a large number of ruby, spinel and emerald mines. During three months, our partner visited mines in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and China. and collected authentic samples directly from the source for the Gubelin Gem Lab reference collection. The knowledge gained on this field trip further expands the expertise of the Gubelin Gem Lab in the field of origin determination. The article contains spectacular photos of the various areas.
